This week I wanted to try "Wash filz-it!" by Coats, to be felted in the washing machine, after knitting or crocheting. I used the thickest yarn, in coconut color. The label indicates a shrinkage, after washing, ranging from 30 to 40%, as also occurs for carded wool generally used to make felt.
I thought about making a bag to see how this yarn actually behaves. The work was performed with n ° 8 needles.
Below are the photos of the various steps during the realization of the bag with a description of the various phases.
The first photo shows the finished work so that you can better understand all the steps;
The processing of the yarn, growing one stitch at the beginning and one at the end of each knitted needle;
After a linear part the decrease begins, always two stitches every knitted row, at the beginning and at the end. At this point I took the measurements to then calculate the shrinkage after washing;
The trapezoidal sides start from the widest base and gradually decrease the stitches;
I sewed the center and side pieces together;
Stop and cut the threads I wrap in a towel and put in the washing machine at 40 °;
This is the result obtained, re-measuring to check the shrinkage I could see that there is a percentage difference between the shrinkage of the width and that of the length. In practice, the length (the measurement from the beginning to the end of the work) has shrunk by a little more than 30%, while the width has shrunk by just 20%;
Here you can see the shape of the cut cloth that will be used to cover the inside of the bag and in part it will also be seen on the outside. Obviously the cuts were made leaving the margins for the seams;
After turning the bag, precisely the cloth at the base, it is important to be precise in the width because inside I will put a thin plasticized sheet (with rounded corners) that will give a little support to the base;
Once I put the sheet on, I close the fourth side too and start the final seam, I used a pink thread in contrast with the brown;
Here's what the work looks like at this point, now comes the hardest part ... sewing everything; I did it by hand, you will not see stitches on the wool;
At this point the base is sewn, I begin to pin the sides;
The rest are also sewn;
I insert the magnetic button before closing the long sides;
Finally everything is sewn it only needs to insert the handles, but this is done in a few seconds.
In conclusion, the important thing to remember is that this type of wool (at least as far as my knitting trial is concerned) shrinks slightly differently between width and length (~ 20% width and ~ 30% length), probably the behavior will be different working it with crochet or with different n ° needles. Remember to be flexible in deciding the size of your jobs, consider shrinkage, and only cut trims after felting.
